The joy of football debate eh, Snipe? I heard exactly the same as you but come to a different conclusion. I saw Wright's assessment as a veiled criticism of Bilic; affectively asking why you'd have Carroll's strength but play him wide and deep so often.

There will now be a counter-argument with Carroll critics suggesting it's the player's fault he ends up playing where he is. It always goes on and is usually based on who's side you take in the argument. Truth is though is that Manager's take the can so often because the teams formation and tactics is entirely down to them.

If true, and with Carroll's injury history, I think West Ham will have trouble turning down £20m but I bet Koeman would make better use of AC than we've ever done. I don't understand why we only see him as a big battering ram when he's obviously better than that.

Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Actually with his appearances it would equate to 47 points
18 games at 1.4 + 20 games at 1.1 = 47.2

Anyway those stats don't include the level of opposition nor who else was injured at the time. We played a lot of games with NO strikers due to injuries. With this lump being out for over half the time he's been here

My problem with him (aside from being permanently injured) is that she he plays we completely change our style of play. When he's good he's superb. When he's not he is less than useless

Excellent, a fairly even split to show that the points average isn't skewed one way or the other. Thanks

Stewie

How about this stat
West ham games with andy carroll since 2012 =101
Games without = 115

Less than a 50% appearance rate

Thanks for that. So without him we're looking at around 42 points a season and with him it's around 53.

Amazing how many of our fans would prefer us to be a struggling team battling against relegation than a comfortably midtable side.

Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Does anyone know what our result stats are with and without Carroll since he signed for us?

Prior to spurs game:
With - win % 38 avg goals scored 1.4 points per game 1.4
Without - win % 26.9 avg goals scored 1.1 points per game 1.1

The suggestion that he's a problem for us is a complete nonsense.

Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Carroll did have a chance from a great cross from the right that went across goal but he wasn't quick or mobile enough to get on the end of it

Ian Wright was spot on oh his assessment last night - saying that Carroll is always in positions that you don't want him to be in, too deep or wide. So even when we get in decent positions he's nowhere near where he should be for a decent delivery tonfind him. When he plays, the opposition just pushes upnabd he gets all frustrated and does a sort of disabled headless chicken act, flapping about in different areas but not getting there quickly and having little effect

The first half hour against Spurs, with mobile forwards up front, we lined them back and looked on the verge of breaking through all the time if the right ball came their way. That never happens with carroll

The only reason our results have been better with him than without him this season is because he's played in the winnable home games. What has he actually contributed to the points we've got with him on the pitch?

(Ps. I think we should sell!)

Would be better off getting a transfer to Holby City.

This season we have seven points from four with him and none from three without, although admittedly a very small sample size. Last season our most consistent results seemed to be around the them off the year when he was fit.

He may change the way we play for the worse, but do our opposition change their see up and style to cope with his perceived threat?

Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
master, oh right so it wasn't a decent cross so carols effort doesn't count. So in summary then we had one decent cross all game which we scored from. That then proves the point even more, the problem isn't the strikers it the service our midfield provide,

master 12:37 Sun Oct 1
Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
CH - sorry mate but i can't agree the Carroll's effort that hit the bar was a decent cross. it was a poorly hit cross which managed to find Carroll, who was, as usual, 5-10 yards behind where he ought to be. This time he got lucky as it was scuffed into him and he deflected it onto the bar.

you can see that because no defender expected the ball to go anywhere near there at all. none of them reacted. everyone gets fortunate once in a while. that was carroll's moment.

chelmsfordhammer 12:33 Sun Oct 1
Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Master, any striker will have a field day with the right kind of service. It proved it yesterday when as soon as decent crosses were put in Carroll in fact hit the post and Sakho scored. That says to me the problem is the service we're providing to our strikers. Sakho, Hernandez and Carroll are all decent strikers and used in the right way all give us different options but for that to be productive they need to be in the box not out on the wing doing the job of our midfield.

master 12:28 Sun Oct 1
Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Carroll would never (NEVER) have got on the type of cross Masuaku put into the box. He just isn't anywhere near mobile enough.

The players know that when he's the focal point of our attack and so our crosses are high float crap which is easily dealt with. Therefore, Carroll is the problem.

Sakho and Henrandez would have a field day with the right kind of service. Work it out wide and cross low and with pace into the 6 yard box. The alternative option, the type of ball we currently call plan A, should be used every once in a while to mix it up for the sake of surprise. In essence, we play inverted.

Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
We aren't good enough in midfield to play 4-4-2. We had two centrally yesterday and were absolutely hopeless.

We could, of course, have done so if we hadn't bid half of our main targets release clause. But now we'll have to muddle through with what we have

chelmsfordhammer 12:15 Sun Oct 1
Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
It doesn't force us to play Hernandez out wide at all. You could always play 4-4-2 which plenty of teams do. Because bilic chooses not to is down to bilic.

JayeMPee 12:13 Sun Oct 1
Re: Everton being linked with £20 million bid for Andy Carroll!
Injured far too many times and forces bilic to play Hernandez wide which is crazy. Anything over £30m would be a good deal - after all he is seen as the toffees replacement for Lukaku!
